Ethical considerations are more important than polarized judgments of right and wrong. They involve exploring principles, morals, and values behind the particular intent, intervention, and action.
Ethics can sometimes be confused with law. Some ethics are beyond the remit of law and say more about our commitment as professionals to our clients in the community we serve.
For example, it is not unlawful per se to embark on a consensual relationship with the client. Still, it would contravene just about every code of therapeutic ethics, which states that a practitioner will not cross the boundaries appropriate to the practitioner/client relationship.
The fundamental principles of the ethics code are:
WORKING TOWARDS THE GOOD OF THE CLIENTS AND DOING NO HARM
We practitioners of hypnosis hold the welfare of our clients central to our work and so commit to avoiding harm.
BEING TRUSTWORTHY AND RESPONSIBLE:
Hypnotists endeavor to establish trust with their clients and the community in which they work; therefore, practitioners not only honor the trust placed in them by their clients and the community but also act in a respectful, professional, and ethical manner when representing their profession.
RESPECT FOR THE DIGNITY AND RIGHTS OF OUR CLIENTS:
Clients have the right to self-determination and to be shown dignity and respect for making their own lawful decisions
JUSTICE:
Practitioners are aware of their own judgments based on their own experiences and need to take precautions to provide a service that is not restricted by their own prejudice and limitations of expertise. This also means respecting the diversity of persons without prejudice to color, race, belief, gender, sexuality, social context, and mental and physical abilities.
INTEGRITY AND SELF-RESPONSIBILITY:
Practitioners work to be as honest, truthful, and accurate as possible. They are also responsible for looking after their own needs and health, so hypnotists will only commit to a practice that they can offer, being aware of their expertise, training, health, and well-being, and let the client know if anything changes.
